Law
15th and 16th centt. Vellum. Ca. 10⅕ × 6⅗ (pp. 1-4, 31-2, 39-40, 41-2, 53-6 smaller than the rest). Ff. 28, paginated 1-56, a late foliation, occurring on initial folios only, being cancelled. The ms. is a composite one, consisting of five distinct sections, viz., A , acephalous, pp. 1-6; B, pp. 7-30, bound in wrong order (see infra), with chasms before p. 7, after p. 10, and before pp. 19, 27; C, pp. 31-2, a mere slip of vellum, mounted on fresh vellum; D, pp. 33-52, with chasm after p. 50; E, pp. 53-6, bound in wrong order (see infra). The colophons and Marginalia on these sections are unusually numerous and informative; they are given in full below. They supply the names of students attending well-known Law schools of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and serve to add to our existing information with regard to these schools. Section A comes from the Mac Aedagáin school at Dún Daighre, and bears the names of several scribes, viz., Donnchadh (p. 1 a i.), who announces that he has come from an Ghrainseach to Dún Daighre (ibid.) , Domhnall (p. 2 b i.), Giolla na Naomh (p. 3 b i.), Saordálach Óg mac Diarmada (pp. 4, inf. marg., 5 a i, 6 b i.), and Gabrial (mac Conchobhair) Ó Deorain (p. 6 b i.). At p. 6, inf. marg., it is expressly stated that Gabrial Ó Deorain and Saordálach Óg are two of the three main scribes of this section A. Saordhálach Óg, who is working at Dún Daighre, and Muileann Dúna Daighre (p. 4, inf. marg.), gives his date of writing as 1475 (p. 5 a i.). "Gaibrial Ó Deoradhain" signs and dates a colophon on p. 5 b i at an Ghrainseach, 1575, in which he refers to Saordhálach Óg as his "seise" and the owner of the ms. The solution of the discrepancy of date here must await a detailed examination of the hands of extant legal codices of similar date and provenance. A "Gabrial" who signs entries in T.C.D. H. 3. 17 (now no. 1336), giving as his date of writing 1577, may be our scribe. It is very probable that Saordhálach Óg and Giolla na Naomh were members of the Mac Aedhagáin family of Dún Daighre; these names are common in Clann Aedhagáin pedigrees, cf. 1233, 28 v. b, supra. Section B is an Ó Deoráin ms., evidently written at an Ó Deoráin school. The namesGiolla na Naom Óg (p. 11, inf. marg.), Flann (mac Cairbre) Ó Deoragain (pp. 12, sup. marg., 13, inf. marg.),Domhnall (mac Cairbre), Ó Deorain (p. 12, inf. marg.), Caithair (p. 13, inf. marg.), Uilliam (p. 14, inf. marg.),Fergal mac Baethgalaigh (p. 15, inf. marg.), Fergal mac Briain (p. 16, inf. marg.), Corc Ó Cadhla (p. 17, inf. marg.), Uir sine (ms. cine) Nomen (p. 26, inf. marg.), who all seem to be working for Cairbre (mac Domhnaill) Ó Deoráin (passim). Giolla na Naomh Óg calls him his "foster father of instruction" (fithir), Corc Ó Cadhla calls him his "companion" (seise). For Corc Ó Cadhla, see 444, 445, supra. The place of writing is given as Tír Briúin ar or Sinna, see further Colophons B, infra. In Section C only one scribe gives his name (Cairbre, p. 32, marg.). The Conchabhar whom he addresses (ibid.) is possibly a second scribe. In Section D we meet again scribes of the Ó Duibhdábhoireann Law school, already familiar through Brit. Mus. Eg. 88, working under the same Domhnall Ó Duibhdábhoireann (p. 50), viz., Duibh (p. 34), Semus (p. 35), Maghnus (ibid), Tadhg mhac Uilliam (p. 38), Duibhreachtach (p. 39), Saoirbhreathach (p. 40), Brinnach (p. 41), Eoghan (p. 41), Mac in Roitsigh (p. 45). Dábhí Ó Deoráin is frequently named in Marginalia, and the family of Ó Deoráin is stated to be located in the vicinity of Baile Órlaith (p. 42 a i.). Domhnall Ó Duibhdábhoireann gives his date of writing as "1566," and the date "1565" occurs elsewhere in this section. His place of writing is Baile Órlaith (p. 42 a i.) and (uncertain owing to illegibility of the ms. at this point) Béal Atha na [Fearbach]. Several of the colophons and Marginalia below, D, are in cypher.
Section E.—The scribe of this non-legal section does not reveal his identity, but he writes alone in the house of Aod[agán]. For further references to these, and other, names occurring in the ms., the Colophons and Marginalia A-E infra must be consulted. The ms. is written in double column, except where otherwise stated. Section E, which has ornamental capitals, is a fine specimen of handwriting. There are ornamental capitals in Section D also, but those intended to be inserted on A have been omitted. The lining, guided by marginal prickings, is by dry-point. Section D has suffered some damage through the application of destructive aluminium paint on capitals and on crude borders, which are the work of a later unskilled hand. There is no colour on the other sections of the ms. The composition of the gatherings cannot be ascertained owing to the fact that the ms. is at present bound. They appear to be constituted as follows:—pp. 1-4; 5, 6 (single leaf), 7, 8 (single leaf); 9-16; 17, 18 (a single leaf, so nearly resembling 7, 8 in texture that it may be its conjugate); 19-26; 27-30; 31, 32 (single leaf, fragment); 33-52; 53-56. The ms. is bound in leather, blind-tooled; gilt-lettered "Brehon Laws" (on spine). Former Acad. no. 35/5 (see flyleaf). On first folio recto appears, in Vallancey's hand (acc. to O'Curry, Acad. Cat., p. 455), the note "Fragment C."

The leaves of this fragment have been bound out of order. The pages should stand in the order 27-30, 7-10, 19-26, 11-18. Chasms occur before pp. 7, 19, 27.
p.
7 a. [Lebar Aicle.] Fragment, beg. imperfect i leith re hathgabail dogres cinco roib taircsiu dligid (cf. AL iii, 392). The printed text of AL iii, 394. 12-396. 16, 398. 7-16, is based on our ms. [Cf. Eg. 90 f. 14 b.] Breaks off imperfect p. 10 (owing to a chasm in the ms.) at a point corresponding to AL iii, 412.
11 , sup. marg. Note by E. Curry: "It appears to me that pp. 19 to 26 ought to follow page 10. Still there would be a chasm here and at p. 27."
11 - 18 (should follow p. 26; there is no break between pp. 26, 11). Text continues from a point corresponding to AL iii, 504 m., with divergence in sequence and contents. At p. 16 b m. (= AL iii, 508 i.) follows section beg. Tigradus dono it ili a fogla side. [Eg. 88 f. 25.] Text ends on p. 18 b with the words mara tungatar cuigi iad, followed by a scribal colophon. See Colophons B.
There is a chasm in the ms. before p. 19, which may be supplied from H. 3. 17 c. 636-7 (O'D. 886), according to Plummer (loc. cit.).
19 - 26 (should precede p. 11.) Text here corresponds roughly to AL iii, 456-504 m,., with some divergence in sequence and contents. P. 19 a beg. (Text) Andsom dire treibdire.
There is a chasm in the ms. before p. 27. Pp. 27-30 should possibly stand before p. 7.
27 a i. Beg. (Text) A meic ara feiser cin rig for tuaith. Cf. AL iii, 132. The text then follows the printed text consecutively to AL iii, 160 i., where it breaks off imperfect.
