The following page provides information and tutorials of the new infrastructure on the Irish Script on Screen Website.
Access to the images
Images can be accessed through Mirador 3 viewer. Mirador is a web-based digital image viewer that supports deep zoom, analysis, comparison and annotation of high quality cultural heritage images. It is compatible with the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF), and has the capability to load and display hundreds of millions of images published on the web by participating IIIF institutions.
The demo of the IIIF infrastructure on the ISOS website, can be seen here:

Searching
Irish Script on Screen contains a variety of digital content, including catalogues and descriptive data (called metadata). By default, searches will be made across all collections and catalogues. The descriptive data is based on the principles of the Simple Dublin Core™ standard which comprises of fifteen elements and Qualified Dublin Core™ which includes three additional elements. When carrying out a search on ISOS you will be able to search Full-Text as well as refining your search under different headings.
Headings:
Collection: name of location where the item currently resides. Whether that is a private collection or state institution.
Languages: languages the item is in.
Date created: the approximate date the item was created.
Subject: the topic of the item.
Coverage: the spatial or temporal topic of the resource, spatial applicability of the resource, or jurisdiction under which the resource is relevant.
Material: the material or physical carrier of the resource.
Decoration: list of any decorations present in the manuscript.
Hands: an entity primarily responsible for making the content of the resource.
Patron: an entity responsible for making contributions to the resource.
This section is being continually updated and may require further research to define and quantify attributes. Updates\amendments can be sent to ISOS (see feedback form under each manuscript).
Full text searching
This can be carried out by typing one or more words into the search box at the top of the main page and clicking on the magnifying icon, or by pressing enter on your keyboard. You can then further refine the search by selecting a heading on the left.
Search results will be given in both English (EN) and Irish (GA).
ISOS uses object descriptions from many different sources, where person, place, names may not be normalised, in this case the same entity might appear under different names.
By default, ISOS returns 20 results per page, and a short summary of the text around the terms for which you searched. If there is more than one page of results, you will see the number of pages at the top\bottom of the page. To move on to the next page of results, click on the > button at the top\bottom of the page, or click on the number of the page you wish to view at the top\bottom of the page.
Phrased searching
For an exact, targeted search type into the search box the exact terms or phrases you want to search for placing quotes around a phrase, this will search for the exact phrase.
For example, "The Cathach"
Boolean searching
You can use Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT (all upper case letters) to refine your search results.
AND
Using the AND function when searching will allow you to get results which contain both words you are searching for. To use the AND function just type the two words in the search box. The description of all of your search results will contain both words.
For example, Donegal AND Galway
OR
Using the OR function when searching will allow you to find items that contain either one or other of the words for which you have searched. This search will retrieve all records which contain the words Galway or Dublin.
For example, Donegal OR Galway
NOT
You can use the NOT function to exclude words from your search. This will retrieve all the items which contain the word Galway in the description except those which also contain the word Dublin.
For example, Donegal NOT Galway
Combined Boolean Operators
You can also combine AND, OR and NOT searches. For example, if you would like to search for results that contain the subject of medical in either Donegal or Galway, you should type in the search box:
(Donegal OR Galway) medical
You could also use this combined AND and OR search in the following way. To search for the terms medical OR medicine in either Donegal or Galway you should type:
(Donegal OR Galway) (medical OR medicine)
