Bailiúchán de 1,300 de lámhscríbhinní Gaeilge atá ag Leabharlann Náisiúnta na hÉireann. Tá nach mór leath an bhailiúcháin sin cláraithe go hiomlán agus foilsithe ina bhfascúil (Catalogue of Irish Manuscripts in the National Library of Ireland (1967–)). Nessa Ní Shéaghdha a rinne cuid mhaith den obair sin agus tá an tOll. Pádraig Ó Macháin ag gabháil dó i gcónaí.

Tá méadú tagtha de réir a cheile ar líon na lámhscríbhinní Gaeilge ó bunaíodh an Leabharlann sa bhliain 1877. Is amhlaidh a ceannaíodh fomhór na leabhar: an ceannach is suaithinsí ná 178 de leabhair a bhí ina leabharlann ag Sir Thomas Phillipps in Cheltenham. Rinneadh roinnt mhaith lámhscríbhinní a bhronnadh ar an Leabharlann i gcaitheamh na mblianta chomh maith. Bhronn seacadóirí Dháithí Uí Choimín 33 de leabhair ar an Leabharlann sa bhliain 1907; agus thug Séamus Ó Casaide, bailitheoir agus scoláire, 90 leabhar mar bhronntanas orainn. An bronntanas is mórthaibhsí sna blianta deireannacha ná an Duanaire Núinseannach, a bhronn John Rohan, Uas., sa bhliain 1998.

Ón 14ú haois ar aghaidh do na lámhscríbhinní Gaeilge seo, ach tá iontu téaxaí atá i bhfad níos luaithe ná sin, chomh fada siar leis an 8ú haois do chuid acu. Tá traidisiún na scríobhaithe Gaelacha ó gach aon aird den tír le fáil iontu, go háirithe Corcaigh, Íochtar Connacht, tuaisceart Laighean, oirdheisceart Uladh, agus cathracha Bhaile Átha Cliath agus Bhéal Feirste. Tá le fáil iontu laochscéalta, fianaíocht, ríscéalta, miotaseolaíocht, ábhar diadha, gramadach, ceol, dlí, naomhsheanchas, ginealaigh, réalteolaíocht, agus dindsheanchas. Tá ar an mbailiúchán seo aistriúcháin ar sheanchas ó i bhfad i gcéin, traidisiún leighis na nArabach san áireamh. Ón 15ú haois ar aghaidh do na lámhscríbhinní leighis (G 8, G 11–G 13, G 201, G 414, G 453, G 455, G 503 and G 512) agus aistriú ar théacsaí Laidne den gcuid is mó atá iontu.

Cuirfidh tionscnamh ISOS ar chumas scoláirí agus léitheoirí eile teacht a bheith acu ar scata lámhscríbhinní tábhachtacha de chuid na Leabharlainne gan aon ghá a bheith acu leis na leabhair féin a láimhseáil, rud a choimeádfaidh ó mheath iad. Bíodh is go bhfuil clár caomhnaithe dá gcuid féin ag an Leabharlann, fáiltíonn ó chroí roimh chúnamh ISOS sa chúram tábhachtach seo. Beidh ar chumas ISOS freisin lámhscríbhinní atá scartha dá chéile ina gcodanna a thabhairt le chéile go digiteach. An tairbhe is mó a ghabhann leis an tionscnamh, áfach, ná go gcabhróidh go mór le Leabharlann Náisiúnta na hÉireann chun a ndualgas maidir lena bhfuil faoina gcúram acu a chur ar fáil don saol mór, agus taighde nua a chothú agus a spreagadh san am gcéanna.
