Leabhar Bhaile an Mhóta
14th-15th cent. Vellum. 15¼ × 9¾ (some leaves cut smaller, notably ff. 89, 248, 267, [275]). Ff. 251, excluding binder's blank leaves. A pagination in ink (inferior margin), beginning with binder's fly leaves and evidently added at the same time as the similar pagination in the Great Book of Lecan, may be neglected here, as may also the pencilled pagination standing on the lower margin. The foliation running 1-275, recto, superior margin (it has been duplicated by a later hand), appears to be contemporary with the manuscript, but is inaccurate, the numbers '144' and '210-219' having been skipped. In the following pages the references are to this foliation. For the sake of convenience the Facsimile (1887) pagination is sometimes given (in Clarendon type), and in the list of contents this always precedes the manuscript foliation. A considerable number of folios have been lost since the old foliation was added, viz.: ff. 1, 9, 24-30, 42, 68, 69, 86, 129, 227, this last having been cut out. One folio (or gathering) was already missing after fo. 96 and another after fo. 146 before the foliation was added. The foliator was unaware that these chasms existed in his ms. ; he cannot therefore have been one of the scribes. The binder (at the instance of O'Curry?) has marked the lacunae by the insertion of blank vellum leaves.
The ms. was written at various times and places by various hands. The name of the book connects it with Ballymote, in the present County of Sligo, the former seat of the Mac Donnchaid of Corann, under whose patronage the book would appear to have been written. The most important indication of the time of writing is the scribal colophon occurring p. 106: "Is e in Toirrdelbach Og sin mac Aeda as ri Connacht ag scribadh na codach sa do'n leabar a tig Tomaltaig mic Taidg mic Tomaltaig mic Muirghiusa mic Donnchaid mic Tomaltaigh mic Conchobhair mic Diarmata o fuiled Mic Dhiarmata a mBaili in Mhuta." To this may be added the scribal colophon on p. 99 under the pedigree of Tomaltach mac Taidg mic Tomaltaig . . . mic Donnchaid . ... mic Diarmada: " Is e in Tomaltach sa ba righ ar Airteach ⁊ ar Thir Oilell ⁊ ar Dha Chorand ⁊ ar cúig baili Cloinni Fearmhuighi ⁊ ar Tír Tuathail ag scribadh in leabairsea." Since Toirrdelbach Óg Ó Conchobhair was King of Connacht in the years 1384-1406 (see note in Charles O'Conor's hand in the margin) and Tomaltach became chief of Tir Oilella in 1383 this portion of the manuscript must date from the late fourteenth century. The principal scribes, whose signatures appear on the manuscript, are Solam Ó Droma, Robertus Mac Sithigh, and Magnus Ó Duibgennain (see scribal notes cited in full below). These three men all appear to have been pupils of one Domnall Mac Aedagain; in the case of Magnus Ó Duibgennain this fact is plainly stated. The Annals of the Four Masters record the death of Ó Duibgennain under the year 1452: "Ua Duibhgennan Baile Cailleadh Foghair [Castlefore, near Fenagh, County of Leitrim] .i. Magnus mac Maoileachlainn Ruaidh d'ég." His tutor may have been the grandfather of the Mac Aedhaccain whose obit occurs FM 1529: "Mac Aedhaccain (.i. Urmuman) .i. Domnall mac Aedha mic Domhnaill cenneicces Leithe Mogha ar fheineachus ⁊ fhilidheacht d'écc." The scribe known as Solam O Droma is possibly an Ó Droma of Fermanagh, but of Robertus Mac Sithigh the Annals have no record known to the present cataloguer. The following scribal notes bearing on the different hands stand in the manuscript:—
p. 55, inf. marg. "A Dhia ⁊ a Thrinoid ⁊ a Shaingte Lindean o tarrla sibh ar aen la ⁊ bhar cumachta le chele co furtaighi sibh ⁊ co foirthi in fear ata ag troscadh libh .i. Magnus Ó Duibgennan fear in leabair sea." Over the signature here is written that of a former owner of the manuscript, "Tomas O Duirnighin" (cf. 245 b 35, 305, 443. See below).
p. 225 c. "Finit amen, fínit do'n Naemhseanchas, Robeartus Mac Sithigh scripsit."
p. 279, sup. marg. "Fechain glesa ó Maelruan mac Fergail."
p. 281 b. "Finit amen. Solamh O Droma nomine sgribsid."
p. 291, sup. marg. "A Dia ge mor maith in leabhar sa is olc sgribthar é" (in what appears to be Magnus Ó Duibgennain's hand).
p. 333 a 17. "Finit Amen. Finit. Solamh O Droma nomine scripsit."
p. 380, inf. marg. "As caech cna na bliadna sa."
p. 416v, sup. marg. "Atá in dubsa ag leathad re flichi in lae ⁊ is im aenar domsa gan Mhagus [=Mhagnus] uair is fata atá."
p. 418v, sup. marg. "Sechtmain oniugh co haine in Cesda ⁊ is olc lim tinde mu coisi."
p. 431, sup. marg. "Ata cruach iga denum aniubh ag Mac Aedagan Mor i Cepaig Ruittin ⁊ gurub e fein chaitfes."
p. 445, inf. marg. " [A]niub tairnic do Magnus Ó Duibgennáin derid na Troi do scribad in dardain remi Feil Michil (?) a tig Domnuill meic Aedagan ⁊ as mesti lim fad in fuirig ata ar m'oidi inmuin .i. ar Mac Aedagan co ndechmais amach d'ar thig ⁊ mina buil a teach-sun ni fhil tech imar i[n] tech so ara febus."
p. 485: "Finit, Amen. Finit, Solamh Ó Droma nomine scripsit."
The book would appear to have belonged to Mac Donnchaid, chief of Tir Oilella, till the year 1522, since we find a record in the manuscript stating that Mac Donnchaid sold it in that year to Aedh Óg Ó Domhnaill, with the consent of his family:

p. 401, inf. marg. "Is beg an dith leam O Domnaill do buain an leabair-si dim, or is clu feamachuis dochuaidh air in leaphor." This would seem to have been written by Mac Donnchaid in 1522, before hé parted with the ms. to Ó Donnell. For a further instance of manuscripts being acquired by the O Donnells in their forays, see Introduction to Facsimile of Lebor na Huidre, ed. Bergin-Best, p. x. [It is interesting to find a Leabar Gearr, probably the same book mentioned loc. cit quoted as a source in Book of Ballymote , fo. 55rºb, where it is also called Leabar Cuilen, and fo. 100 vºa, where it is called Libar Gerr Uí Chellaig.]
The book was lost sight of for a century after it came into the possession of the O'DonnelIs. An initialled and dated note standing in the ms., fo. 47 v, "B.N. 1633" which lías been brought out by the use of a re-agent, reveals nothing. The next known record is a reference by Dubhaltach Mac Fir Bisig, writing in 1666 (O'Curry, Acad. Cat., fo. 762, verso), who states that the book was then in Dublin. In 1686 it was in the Library of Trinity College, Dublin (acc. to Catalogues D. 1. 6, D. 1. 7. See Gwynn, Catalogue of Irish MSS. in Trinity College, Dublin, Introd., p. xvii). There is no account in the records of Trinity College to show how the ms. came into the possession of the College, but it is probable that it came there (together with the Great Book of Lecan) among Ussher's mss. The ms. bears the old press-marks DDD. 3, A. 1.5, and D. 18 (see fo. [i]r°, infra. The stamp of the Royal Irish Academy was affixed directly over them, so that they are now difficult to see). Ussher quotes Lecan and Ballymote frequently in his Antiquitates as Liber Sliguntinus and Liber Balimotensis (Gwynn, loc. cit.).
The ms. was lent to Dr. Raymond by the authorities of Trinity College without bond or security about 1720, after which it disappeared again (see curious letter addressed by Raymond to the Earl of Inchiquin ? quoted by O'Curry, Acad. Cat., pp. 763-4, from Raymond's manuscript collections in the R.I.A., vol. 1, p. 13). It is noteworthy that "E. Buidhe" [Aodh buidhe Mac Cuirtín] signs some translations from Ballymote in the Raymond collections. It is noted as missing from T.C.D. in 1742 in a note on the flyleaf of Cat. D. 1. 6. According to Vallancey's Green Book (R.I.A., 24 E 4), Dr. Raymond lent a manuscript (which Vallancey believed to be Lebor Lecan, but which was probably the Book of Ballymote) to Tadhg Ó Neachtain. Vallancey adds that the book was stolen from Ó Neachtain by a servant of Judge Marlay, named Eagan, and was known to be in Judge Marlay's library at his death. That Tadhg Ó Neachtain was in possession of the book, or had access to it, in 1726 is proved by his summary of its contents (T.C.D., no. 1361, see Gwynn, Catalogue, p. 192), made in that year. His friend, Richard Tipper, made a partial transcript of the book in 1728 (T.C.D., no. 1295). Gwynn suggests that while Tipper and Neachtain were at work the book was still in Raymond’s hands ( loc. cit., Introd., p. xvii). Acc. to 23 E 16, p. 332, it was at Carrignavar in 1767. An indication of its location in 1769 is supplied by a note signed by Tomás Ó Duirnighin, of Drogheda, in 1769 (p. 245 b 35). It appears to have been in the hands of one John Finglass, weaver, of Green Lane, Drogheda (lent to him by Ó Doirnín ?) in the years 1772-74 (see Maurice O'Gorman's Minutes of the Committee of Antiquities of the Dublin Society, 1772-4, O'Curry, Acad. Cat., p. 766). In a list of Ó Doirnín's mss. made in 1774 by O'Reilly it is included ( ibid., p. 759). In 1777 the Book of Ballymote was in the hands of the Chevalier O'Gorman, was lent by him to Charles O'Conor in 1777-1781 (acc. to notes in the ms.), and was presented by the Chevalier O'Gorman to the Library of the Royal Irish Academy in 1785 (see Academy Minutes of June 6th, 1785). Unfortunately O'Gorman's letter to the Academy has not been preserved, and we are unable to stat e where or how he got possession of the book. O'Curry relates (from a source which he had forgotten) that O'Gorman purchased it for £20 from a millwright's widow in Drogheda (Acad. Cat.. p. 1767). In the library of Trinity College, Dublin, there is a transcript made by Richard Tipper in 1728 (see above), which contains material now missing from the original after pp. 16 , 66, 406; the Ó Neachtain transcript of Lebor Gabála (T.C.D., no. 1289) supplies material lost after p. 44 which may be a copy of the original.
Among the marginal notes can be found the signatures of Cathal Óg Ó Conchobhair (fo. 7v b, "an leabhar so ... a seailbh Chathail Óig Uí Chonchabhair ó Ath na gCárr 1777 et a íasacht aige on Ridire mhaith Tomas Ua Gormáin, o Bhurgoghne isin Ffrainc." Cf. ff. 5, 8v, 17 v, 20, 21, 22, 23, 31, 37, 37 v, 38, 39, 43, 43 v, 48, 49, 52 c, 58, 62, 62 v, 63, 66, 70, 77, 85, 88, 88 v, 93, 93 v, 97 v, 98 v, 102 v, 105 v, 106, 107, 113, 113 v, 114 v, 115, 115 v, 116, 116 v, 117, 119, 136, 137 v, 139, 140, 145, 145 v, 152, 153, 154 v, 180, 181, 208 v, 230, 267), Colonel Vallancey (ff. 113 v, 142, 170 v, 181 a), and Tadhg Ó Flannagáin (front flyleaf, ff. 249, sup. marg., 267 v, 268, partly in red ink). Tadhg [Theophilus] Ó Flannagáin had the book in his hands in 1784. To Ó Conchobhair we owe the description of the manuscript affixed at the beginning (see below) and the titles in English of the various sections of the work. Fo. 1 contains the following lines written from bottom to top in an old hand, but apparently not one of the scribal hands: gach macaomh mar múintear, 1 q., from Cach én mar a adhha, signed: "Misi Seaan no Tuathal." A calculation on p. 116 ("1724 - 1447 = 227") does not appear to be of moment for the dating of the ms. The hand of Tomas Ó Duirnighin, already noted, occurs also, f. 108, in a note of two lines, followed by a distich in Owen Connellan's hand.
The manuscript is on the whole in good condition, but the initial folios are slightly affected by worm, which has spread from the worm-eaten wooden sides of cover. Minor defects, some existing previous to the transcription of the text, can be seen by the facsimile. It is to be noted that the facsimile fails to some extent to reproduce the marginal notes, giving the impression that the margins of the ms. have been clipped by the binder. This is not so. The vellum was carefully mended with yellow silk thread at fo. 154 before the text was written. The ruling is partly in brown and partly in dry point, as in the Great Book of Lecan, with marginal prickings. Skilfully executed initial capitals, small capitals, and tail-pieces are added, apparently by one artist. The interlaced designs are in the main zoomorphic, but human beings and leaves are not uncommon, marked originality of treatment and humour being evident throughout. Cf. fo. 151 a i. The scribes left vacant spaces where the ornamental capitals, etc, were intended to stand. A dry point sketch occurs fo. 68 r°a. The colours used in illuminating the interlaced designs are more varied than those used by Gilla Ísu Mac Fir Bisig in filling in capitals in the Great Book of Lecan. Vermilion, chrome, a dull scarlet, crimson, black, green and blue (together with intermediate tones got by mixing the colours) are used here. The colouring is not carried out uniformly throughout, nor does there appear to be any reason why some pages of the ms. are left uncoloured where the obverse of the page is coloured. The following sections of the ms. are filled in with colours: ff. 2 r°-5 v°, 8 r°-23 v°, 32 v°-38 r°b, 43 r°-61 v°, 63 r°-68 v°, 97 r°-109 r°a, 136 r°-138 r°, 188 r°-190 r°, 197 v°-198 r°, 199 r°.
The ms. is bound in leather, with wooden sides, which are worm-eaten. The ms. has been rebacked. Gilt-lettered on back of cover stands the title: "Leabhar Bhaile an Mhuta." Former Academy no. 41/6.
Among the mss. cited by scribes or authors as sources for the present compilation are: Leabar Cuilen .i. in Leabar Gearr, fo. 55 r°b (Libar Gearr Uí Chellaig,. 110 v°a); Saltair Cormaic i Caisiul, Leabar Duin Da Leathghlas, 61 r°a; Leabhar Oilein Indsi Dúine, 57 r°a; Leabhar Droma Saileach, 111v°a; Cin Dromma Snechta, 12 r°b, 111v°a; Leabhar Lothra Ruadhan, 112 r°b; Libar Glinne Dá Locha, 180; Duil Sluinti Laigen, 198, etc. The close resemblance in content between the Great Book of Lecan and the Book of Ballymote has been noted in the Description of the Book of Lecan (see above). The fact that both mss. derive, at least in part, from the same exemplar has also been commented upon.
The following note in the handwriting of Cathal Ó Conchobhair of Belanagare is written on a separate sheet and pasted into the manuscript:—
"The Book of Balimote (the antient seat of the Mac Donoghs of Coran, now one of the Baronies of the County of Sligo).
"In folio 59 of this compilation we find that it was carried on under the patronage of Timothy Mac Donogh, chief of Tir-Olioll, Artagh, the two Corans, Tir-Tohill, ⁊ Clan-Fermoy [districts now comprehended in the Counties of Sligo, Roscomon and Leitrim].
"In folio 62 we find that the Book was transcribed about a.d. 1390, when Torlogh O'Connor was King of Conaght, a prince who began his government over that province a.d. 1384.
"In this, as in all historical collections relating to Antiquity, some are mixed with fable, others are drawn from the purest fountains, such as the Psalter of Cashel, the Book of Glendaloch, the chronological poems of Gilla-Coeman, Gilla-Moduda, Ó Don, Ó Dugan, Ó Flin, Fían of Bute Monastery, and other senachies of repute:—some tracts are of less estimation, and particularly that fathered on St. Benignus the Disciple of St. Patrick bears external as well as internal marks of forgery. Some of the Phenian Institutes are here preserved, as well as the various forms of the Ogam manner of writing, and the last tracts in this compilation are fables of the Argonautic expedition, and Wars of Troy; valuable only for the purity of the language.
"It may be observable that this miscellaneous collection was purchased from the Mac Donoghs of Coran by Hugh Duff Ó Donell, Prince of Tirconnell, a.d. 1522, at the price of 140 milch cows, and is now become the property of the Chevalier Thomas O'Gorman of Cahir-Morroghoe in the County of Clare, chief of the Hy-mbairce Tribe, of the Lagenian Race of Cahir-Mor (foot-note, Cahir-Mor mounted the Throne of Ireland a.d. 174, and was slain in the Battle of Moyacha a.d. 177, by Con his successor. Vid. Ogig: page 310), at present residing in the city of Tonnerre in the Province of Burgundy and Kingdom of France.
"N.B. I have had the possession and use of this Book of Balimote for more than three years, thro' the indulgence of my learned and worthy friend, the Chevalier Thomas. Ó Gorman. I have affixed the above Description to the work, and gave leading Titles to the several Tracts in the English Language, Dublin, June the 13th, 1781. Ch: Ó Conor (81)."
p.
1 fo. [ i ]r°. blank, save for some scribblings (among them a probatio pennae) in various hands: Gach macaomh mar múintear, 1 q., from Cach én mar a adhba. "Is leam tusa I Duibginn mhic Mic Con." Under the Royal Irish Academy's stamp can be faintly deciphered the former press-marks DDD. 3, A. 1. 5, D. 18 (see Description of this MS.).
2[ i ]v°. The page is filled by a pen-and-ink drawing of Noah's Ark, in which is a group of four men and four women, one of the former wearing a crown and holding a sceptre in his hand. The dove bearing the olive-branch is seen in the upper corner to the left. The following note occurs: "Bo dearrsgnach an lamh ro graiphni. Mesidhe Tadg Úa Flannagain."
The foregoing leaf is merely a flyleaf. The initial fo. 1 of the written manuscript is missing.
