Adv. LS 72.2.10

Compiled by John Mackechnie p. 226 - 237

Vol. 1, Notes to the Manuscripts, Index of Initia, 1973

Paper. Pp. 474, erroneously numbered by a modern hand, probably that of H.Cameron Gillies, measuring 7 and 3/4th x 6 ins. H.Cameron Gillies gives a somewhat imaginative description of the Ms in the "Celtic Monthly" for July, 1912, p. 122 sqq. Gillies says that the Ms is rather badly written, but in fact the writing is rather good. Again: Gillies says that the Ms is in a wretched condition, crumbling to dust and almost beyond hope of recovery, but on the contrary, the Ms, while by no means in the best state of preservation, is in much better state than many others in the National library. Further Gillies stresses the difficulties of reading the Ms, but for a medical text it is clear and easily read.

The Ms is probably the one referred to by the Reverend Donald Mc Nicol of Lismore in his “Remarks on Dr. Samuel Johnson' s Journey to the Hebrides” (London, 1777), p.263. Two scribes worked on the Ms, viz. (i) Angus son of Farquhar, son of Angus and (ii) Donnchadh mac dubhsleibhte, a name that Macklnnon renders as Duncan Mc Donlevy. A Sean O Duinnshleibh was the scribe of TCD, E 3 29 (fol.24), written in the 16th (?) century, but whether there is any connection between these two is not clear. The Ms was written for Duncan O Conacher between 1611 and 1614, a member of the well-known family of medical men, originally known as O Conachers but, later, as MacConachers. They lived at Airdoran, on the northern shores of Loch Feochan in Argyll, where they were settled in 1530 at least, probably even before that date, and they themselves claim to have come from Ireland. Cf. Mackinnon's "Cat.", p. 63. Eoin ui Concubar appears in a non-textual note in NLS. 72.1.34, fol. 21a, t.m. where he is greeted by the scribe of that Ms on 22nd October, 1603, and Macklnnon, "Cat.", p. 140, seems to imply that" O Conacher”and "Concubar” are the same name, relying, as he seems to be, on Eoin ui Concubar being one of the Lorn physicians. For the old Gaelic medical men cf. O Grady,"Cat.", p. 171 sqq.

The non-textual notes, of which there are a great number in this Ms, show that Angus Mac Farquhar was in the habit of carrying his work about with him and also that he disliked leaving part of the last line of a page blank.

Contents : -

  1. "Aphorisms of Hippocrates", Latin version with running Gaelic version and comments. The text begins abruptly owing to loss of pages at the beginning and the surviving part consists of Bk.iii, sect. 12 - end of Bk.vii Cf. BM.Harl. 4347 (written in the 16th century) and Flower, "Cat.", p. xxxv, where it is pointed out that the Latin text was by Nicolaus Leonicenus, an Italian physician and humanist, born at Vicenza in 1428, who died in 1524. The present Gaelic text follows closely the Greek text in Loeb Classlcs, vol.iv, p. 125 sqq. and the chapters, for the most part, correspond with the chapters of the Greek text. Begins : - ac dul chum...sin togluaisid o gach cuis da loiged, i.e. Loeb Classics, vol. iv, p. 125, Aph. iii, sect. xii. This part ends at the foot of page 2 of the present enumeration of the pp. of the Ms = Aph. iii, sect.xvii, but the text resumes at page 15, line 1 of the Ms, the intervening pages belonging elsewhere, viz.: - pp. 3 and 4, i.e. one folio with its verso, should stand after page 38 and before page 39, while pages 5-14 should stand at the very end of the Ms, i.e. after p. 474.

The text of the Aphorisms then runs on as follows, viz.: - Bk iii ends at p. 19 of the present Ms Bk. iv begins at p. 20 and ends at p. 32, Bk.v begins at p. 32, line 18, bringing in pp. 3 and 4 as mentioned supra, and ends at p. 43, line 3, Bk.vi begins at p. 43, line 4, and ends at p. 50, line 12 and Bk. vii begins at p. 50, line 13, and section Ixii of that Book ends at the foot of page 56, the remainder of the text being lost in the copy before the scribe.
    p. 1 -p. 2 + p. 15 -p. 56 .

  2. Charm also found in EUL Db 7 2 fol.7bl7 where it is said to be for producing sleep. Begins : -+MAXIMIANUS + MELCUS + CONSDANTINUS + DIONICIUS + SERAPHEON + MARCUS + MATEUS + LUCAS + IONNES + MATERUS + MIANUS + AMEN - air codal.
    p. 57 , 1.

  3. Charm similar to that in EUL Db 7 2, fol. 8bl, 2. The text in the present Ms is : - air cosg fola na frona (sic leg. srona ?) : sgriobh an nedan in ti air am bi insna facailse leis in fuil sin fein .i. consumatum est te fit . glei . gleid . de glei . gleid . gleo...a deis (?) aius o deus aius asgirios a donatos i ilios onimais.
    p. 57 ,4.

  4. The rest of this page and its verso is blank. "Lilium Medicinae" of Bernard Gordon, but here without title. Cf. NLS. 72.1.18 ; 72.1.20 ; 73.1.22 and Ms.2076. Cf. also BM.Harl. 4347 (written in the 16th century) fol. 37, a fragmentary text, for which cf. Flower,"Cat" p. xxxvi, and BM. Eg. 89(written on vellum in 1482) and O Grady, "Cat.", p. 202 sqq. Cf. also TCD., H.4.16, p. 69. The present Gaelic text is compared with the Lyons edition of the "Lilium Medicinae" of 1574. The chapter headings are as follows : -

  6. "Regimen Sanitatis Salernitanum'' but different from the "Regimen Sanitatis" published by H. Cameron Gillies, which is, in fact, part of John of Gaddesden' s "Rosa Anglica" as has been pointed out by Winifred Wulff in "ITS" vol. xxv (1923)(1929), p. xlviii, f.n.2, and O Grady, "Cat", p. 201 and pp. 262,263. The present text follows closely the "Regimen Sanitatis" edited by Dr. John Ardronaux (New York, 1870). Cf. also "The School of Salernum. English version by Sir John Harington with History of the School" edited by Francis R. Packard (London, 1922). For the Latin text cf. "Regimen Sanitatis Salerni" edited by Joannes C.G. Ackermann (Stendaliae, l790), p. 155 sqq. Begins : - Anglorum Regi scripsit schola tota Salerni .i. is iad scol Salerni co hulighthi do sgriobh na fersada so dochum ri Sacsan do coimet a slainte. Mackinnon, "Cat.", p. 67, who suggests that in view of the text contained in BM.Ar. 333(written on vellum and paper in 1514 and 1519 by various hands) there was another version of the "Regimen Salernitanum" in the hands of the Gaelic medical men.
