The James Hardiman Library holds, as part of the de hÍde/Hyde collection, a number of Irish manuscripts from the 18th and 19th centuries, which were collected in the course of his work by Douglas Hyde and bequeathed to the Library on his death in 1949. A listing of the manuscripts numbered 1–70 is available in volume 11 of Hayes Manuscript Sources for the History of Irish Civilisation, while a list of the remainder is available from the Special Collections Department of the Library. A series of index notebooks are also available.
In addition, a number of other Irish language manuscripts is held by the Library in the Lamhscribhinní Breise collection. These manuscripts are mainly collections of poetry and copies of Foras Feasa na hÉireann from the 18th and 19th century. There is also a copy of a medical text (LSB 175) associated with the Ó Cianán family of country Fermanagh.

During the year-long project involving the James Hardiman Library, eleven manuscripts were digitised. The Library is delighted to be part of this project and to contribute in a meaningful way to the objectives behind the ISOS project by providing an electronic resource of education and cultural interest.
