Catalogue of Irish Manuscripts in University College Dublin

A 33

MISCELLANEOUS FRAGMENTS

A collection of paper fragments bound together in cover similar to those of A 30 etc., with 'A 33' in gilt on spine. Pp. 1-114 were placed in their present order and given a continuous pagination (on the rectos only) by Father P. S. Dinneen, who also made a manuscript list of their contents.

The sections are as follows: (a) l-[2]. 10 × 15 cms. (b) 3-[28]. 19 × 15 cms. Lower out corners torn away with loss of text, (c) 29-[32]. 20 × 15 cms. (d) 33-6. 19 × 13.5 cms. (e) 37-40 (now bound in more correct order, 38, 37, 39-40). c. 20 × 15.5 cms. No. '29' in ink on p. 39, upper margin. (f) 41-8. 20.5 × 16 cms. (g) 49-50. 21 × 14 cms. (h) 51-4. 22.5 × 16 cms. (i) 55-86 (older pagination, 1-28, on pp. 55-82). 21 × 15.5 cms. (j) 87-98. c. 23.5 × 17 cms. Loss of text at lower outer corners. (k) 99-114. 20.5 × 16.5 cms. Name 'Br. McNevin' on p. 99, right margin. (1) 115-116. 16.5 × 10.5 cms. Stamp of St Isidore's College, Rome, on p. 116. (m) 117-[118]. 11.5 × 10.5 cms. (n) 119-[120]. 18.5 × 9.5 cms. (o) 121-[128]. 20.5 × 16 cms. (p) [129-32]. Two fragments. (q) 133-[152] (numbered correctly but bound 143-[152], 133-[142]; foliation in pencil, 1-10 as now bound; older foliation, 1-4, on pp. 133 ff.). 17 × 13 cms. Stamp of St Isidore's College, Rome, on some pages. (r) [153-4]. A tiny fragment mounted on tissue paper. (s) [155-6]. 20 × 16 cms. Apparently a copy-book cover: coloured pink on verso. '281, Vol. 9' in pencil on p. [155].

Most of the fragments appear to date from the 17th century, but section (k) is 18th century and sections (d) and (s) probably 19th century.

There are no scribal signatures. Sections (f) (h) (i) and possibly (r) appear to be in the hand of Br Míchéal Ó Cléirigh. The hand of section (k) seems to be that of Seón Lloyd, the poet (ob. c. 1786), and section (p) may be the work of Brian Mag Niallghuis, scribe of A 19 and probably A 25. Sections (c) and (m) are by the same hand; section (e) by a hand which also appears in A 25; two hands (pp. 133-9 and 143-[146]) appear in section (q).
