MS 23 D 4

Catalogue of Irish Manuscripts in Royal Irish Academy

5

23 D 4

Scholastic Verse

17th cent. Paper. 5¾ × 3½. pp. 408. Scribe unknown; his spelling shows him to have been a Munsterman. Faded and soiled in parts. There are gaps (not indicated in the pagination, which is of later date than the MS.) after pp. 26, 28, 70, 94, 138, 324 (?), 406, and possibly in a few other places. The lower comers of pp. 1-20 are frayed away, resulting in a loss of some words of the text. Occasionally (as at the bottom of pp. 352, 354, 357, 360, 378) a line of text has been cut away in binding. Bd. in vellum. On p. 173, which was originally left blank, some person other than the scribe has written his name (afterwards crossed out) followed by the words "his book" and the date "1681." On p. 170 a hand other than that of the scribe has written a name, Sean ua(?) S . . which has mostly been crossed out. Some scribbling on p. 302 is now so faded as to be illegible. The ms. was formerly in possession of “Mr. Peter Lavalli, Peruquier of the Four Courts, Dublin” (O’Donovan, ‘Tribes of Ireland,’ pp. 13 n, 103), whose name appears on the inside of the front cover of the ms. as “Peter(?) La Vallée, 1809.” Above this inscription is a note in another (?) hand: “Tonis(?) bought from | EC,” where “EC” may stand for Eugene O ’Curry. The MS. 12 F 8 is a transcript, mainly by O’Curry(?), of a considerable portion of this ms. A similar transcript by O’Curry is, I believe, in the possession of Dr. Douglas Hyde.
